Oatmeal Date Bread

1 c. quick-cooking oatmeal

1 c. hot water

1/2 c. shortening

1/2 c. brown sugar

1/2 c. white sugar

2 eggs

1/2 tsp. cinnamon

1 tsp. baking soda

1/2 tsp. cloves

1/2 tsp. salt

1/2 c. chopped nuts

1/2 c. chopped dates

Pour hot water over oatmeal; cool. Add oatmeal to rest of ingredients and beat well. Place in a well-buttered bread tin. Bake at 350 F for 1 hour. Can be baked in smaller bread tins. Flavour improves if tightly wrapped for a day.
