Wars and Rumors of Wars
And ye shall hear of wars and rumors of
wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all [these things] must
come to pass, but the end is not yet.
Mathew 24:6 I feel this is one of
the most mis-understood bible quotes, at least in some Christian circles,
most notably the powerful television ministries. Jack Van Impe seems to be making a career from
this one particular verse. Just about
every episode of his 30 minute, weekly Christian current events show with his darling wife, Rexella, predicts the end times are upon us. Mr. Van
Impe is certainly not the only Christian alive today who shares this
opinion. Many people believe that this is the eve of the return of Jesus
Christ our Lord and Savior. Wars and Rumors
of Wars - Is that today?
No.... probably not. For throughout all of human history
there have been "wars and rumors of wars". During
my lifetime there have been dozens of wars. Rumors of wars? - Sure, that
too. Every week in the newspaper I can read about some country somewhere
mobilizing as the political leaders use the threat of military force. It
is said that war is a
legitimate political tool. As sad as it is to say - this is true. War is as old
as any civilization. War and the threat of war are the reasons that we are civilized.
Early humans gathered into tribes for security from other tribes. Human tribes
made allies or conquered other tribes and as the tribes grew
in numbers they eventually formed what we think of as nations. Nations
have always used the threat of violence to keep its citizens under control
and to prevent being destroyed by other
nations. SO! It seems the threat or "rumor"
of violence is crucial to a surviving nation. This fact I offer as proof
that there always was and always will be - wars and rumours of wars.
