God, the Bible and Semicolons?
Why are there so many semicolons in the Bible? Were
there no complete thoughts 2000 years ago? It's always semicolon
this and semicolon that. Was this just a stop-gap measure in a
sloppy attempt to translate the bible from Hebrew? It is clear that
Latin translations are rife with semicolons. This must be the origin
of the semicolons in English versions. But the question arises of
where the semicolons came from in the Latin translations. We know
that there are no semicolons in the passage "E Pluribus Unum"
so, again, why so many in the bible? Perhaps was this a means of
making the bible confusing. That way a Roman soldier or spy that tripped
across a hidden copy of the bible wouldn't be able to figure out
what it was saying. This probably saved the lives of many a
Christian who would just as soon not get thrown to the lions. Jesus
foresaw the unfolding of these events in St Mark 14:46 "And they laid
their hands on him, and took him."
